CCP holds virtual press conference about the EIB scam

imageOn Friday, September 1st, I got to attend a virtual press conference held by CCP so that they could clear up some mis-information about the recent EIB scam. On hand to discuss the situation was Magnus Bergsson, CMO for CCP. One of the things he wanted to make clear was that the 790 billion ISK figure may be an inflated estimate, and that due to attempts to "launder" the cash through several accounts, it may take time to track down an exact amount, if it's even possible. He also wanted to reiterate that the EIB was not an official banking option that was controlled by CCP, the EIB was strictly a player-run enterprise. He then stated that the Development Team wants to ensure a freedom of playstyle for EVE, and even though CCP do not agree with cally's actions, they see an importance that those actions are possible.

Cally's screenshot showing the transfer of the full amount was faked, according to Bergsson, since no transaction that large took place according to server logs. And even though cally did not break any game rules, or violate the EULA, the situation is being watched closely. Since they are watching, they know that the ISK hasn't seemed to have made into the seconday market yet. CCP does not support or encourage ISK sales for cash in any way, and think that it violates the spirit of the game.

One of the reporters in attendance asked if this would affect the game economy, and the response was along the lines that this won't affect the economy as much as you think it would with the size of the player base, but if it had happened when the user numbers were lower, it would have caused some trouble.

Also, there is some secret squirrel change coming that Magnus really wanted to tell us, but it would have to wait until everything was ready.

The conference was held using Vivox's VoIP technology, and everything seemed to be working fine with it. EVE will be using Vivox's voice chat system built directly into the client soon, and it should be an interesting addition to the game dynamic. For the record, my headset does not suck, I just work in an office with a lot of background noise, also known as loud co-workers. I had to turn down the mike, otherwise the attendees would have been subjected to hearing what get shouted across the room when we are play testing a religious-themed RTS.

Lord, have mercy.
