During a presentation on the graphics upgrade coming in the second phase of the next update, it was made clear that to take advantage of the shiny new ship textures players will not have to be running Vista or use DirectX 10. Although to get the maximum performance you would want to look into buying the new OS.
CCP and Nvidia have been in a close relationship regarding the development of the new 8800 series of video cards, and EVE Online has been used to demonstrate the performance of the new hardware.
I also learned that the name of the Graphics Builing Tool that has been in use since 2000 is Jennifer, after Jennifer Lopez. Sadly, just like the real J-Lo, Jennifer is showing its age, and has been replaced by the new hotness. The new Graphics Tool that was developed to better handle the creation of EVE Online models and textures is named Jessica. After Jessica Alba. I'm just glad that I don't have to install Vista until the required 2 Service Packs to make it stable come out.
The graphics that were shown do look impressive, and I can't wait to see how the new client will run on my PC. It might be time for a new monitor though.
