Getting to GDC proved to be an adventure in itself. After a routine flight from the Home Office to Chicago all seemed to going fine. Then it happened. Our flight to San Francisco pulled away from the gate, rolled 100 feet and stopped. The captain clicked on his voice-of-God mike and announced that due to weather at our destination, we wouldn't be taking off for two hours. Why they had to move the plane in order to tell us this remains a mystery. This made our arrival time 3pm. I had an appointment at 3pm. Awesome.
Sadly, we got to San Francisco too late to get anything actually productive done, and there was nothing to do but attend parties. I know, I was heart-broken. I hit up the Canada Games Hockey Night party first, and scored a sweet hockey jersey and managed to score 4 out of 5 goals on a Wii they had set up. I was also able to avoid eating poutin, which was a personal victory.
After that, I slid into the SOE party and got some good-natured ribbing from Alan Crosby who wondered how I got in, heh. As much as I tend to complain about their games, they are always good sports about it. And Open Bars bring people together.
I should have finished up the night at the Curse Gaming party, where I found a bartender who didn't think there should be any Coke in a Captain and Coke. Sometime later in the evening, I ended up outside the club bellowing Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with members of the PMS Clan. That could have been the most surreal thing to occur all day.
I decided that the fuzzy feeling was getting to be too much and toddled off toward the W to see what was going on there. After walking around for a bit and not seeing anyone I knew, I walked back outside and discovered that I did not know how to get back to my hotel. Using a spark of good judgement from somewhere, I hailed a cab and told the driver to take me to the hotel. The driver then informed me that that address was 2 blocks away. I told him I was wasted, he already had me in his cab and to just get me home.
7 dollars. 2 blocks. I'm beginning to understand why they don't let me out more often.
